König Opera

König Opera was first staged at the queer bar Tipsy Bear Berlin. Now we are taking it further, developing and adapting it for the theater stage at Ballhaus Ost—bringing our queer community into the theater space!

Staying true to drag tradition, each performer creates their own character. At the same time, we draw from theater tradition by weaving these characters together through a shared storyline:

“Buba Sababa and Dick Hunt, two opera singers on the peak of their career, celebrate the premier of a legendary Opera - a piece that had not been staged in over 100 years. Rumors say the play is cursed, and a terrible fate awaits those who dare to interpret it… Come and experience this live-singing Drag King theater show, and discover the destiny of Buba and Dick!”

König

König is a Drag King community-building project created by and for trans, nonbinary people, women, and queers.

König began in 2019, at a time when Drag Kings were barely visible in Berlin. We started as a monthly Drag King Theater Show at Tipsy Bear, offering a stage for first-time Drag Kings to explore and perform. Our mission has always been to build community and spread knowledge about
the art and culture of Drag Kings.

We started because Drag Kings were missing from the city’s drag scene, and we changed that.
There weren’t enough trans, nonbinary, women, and queer hosts, so we created workshops and taught how to produce events. We work for affordable events, higher artist fees, and for creating
connections across communities.

We’ve helped reshape the drag scene in Berlin, and we continue to do so.
