Hot Tropical Nights – The jazz scenes of Rio de Janeiro and Havana around 1950 and their international reception.
Â
Is salsa Cuban – or a US invention? Son, danzón, cha-cha-chá and mambo have their roots in Cuba. Yet salsa as a term and musical synthesis emerged in New York in the 1960s and ’70s. Havanna Express combines Cuban tradition, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and jazz, revealing how cultural encounters gave rise to a global musical language.

Jazz am Helmholtzplatz e.V. is an association based in Berlin-Pankow that aims to create more space for jazz in the public sphere and, above all, more performance opportunities for jazz musicians. It combines concerts, discourse, and educational outreach. At its core is the development of a community: jazz as a vibrant collective, a form of cultural exchange, and an open space for encounters, participation, and new ideas.
